All the elements are there, from Giacchino's recognizably big sounds to Williams' beloved original melodies. Williams chose to sit out the Rogue One gig due to a high volume of work which, as an 84-year-old man, prevented him for even considering a new project. However, in the Star Wars universe, Giacchino's inclusion comes as a major switch-up from the franchise's go-to composer: John Williams. His credits span film, television, and video games. In 2016 alone, Giacchino's credits appear on Rogue One, Doctor Strange, Star Trek: Beyond, and Zootopia. Giacchino, the composer for Rogue One, has built an illustrious career scoring some of the most popular films with his instantly recognizable music. And that’s wonderful news.Even if you don't know Michael Giacchino's face, you probably know his work. After the underwhelming Doctor Strange score, Rouge One proves Giacchino can still be a top-tier composer. Of course, Giacchino’s no Williams but that doesn’t stop him from trying. I’ve said for a while Giacchino is Williams’ probable successor. The choir is a definite pull from his Star Trek scores, as well as his now-obligatory piano solo and one or two motifs.
There’s so much new music that sounds like a Williams piece you may have to double-check the composer. Giacchino does have a few marks present that sightly downgrade things. In terms of orchestrations, everything you’d expect returns: fast and complicated brass sections, whirring strings, dynamic themes, and the big crescendos/decrescendos. Save for a few moments everything sounds like it belongs in the Star Wars universe. Giacchino’s new themes and pulsating strings echo Williams’ compositions without sounding too Star Trek-esque. You don’t hear the callbacks often but you don’t need to. In fact, he works in several of John Williams original themes and motifs to make a score that sounds like Star Wars.

As the Hollywood holiday movie season gears up for action, it’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that likely holds the title for most anticipated upcoming release. Considering the short time span, we’d excuse Giacchino if his score sounded rushed or generic. Rogue One composer Michael Giacchino opens up about his score for the Star Wars film, the time constraints involved and the emotions of the franchise. Hearing a Desplat Star Wars score would be terrific and I hope he’s considered for another film in the saga. Alexandre Desplat was the first choice but he became unavailable due to reshoots.
